Week 30, 2012

The beginning of this story starts in a snug dinner hosted by Bettina and Bernhard.  I believe at the beginning I was mainly listening and making questions.  I was in a discovery mood. For those who know me, might not be a surprise 🙂

Listen to the passion and dreams from others,  allows me to detect life,  specially if I’m on the correct frequency.  Additionally, we say much beyond words, and when one expresses from one’s passion and dreams, the message is intense. When we learn to listen, I think our communication is enriched. But I am still a pupil on this,  I admit it.

Anyway, we started the conversation about what type of music we liked. Thus, at some point we were invited to watch the video from the Verbier Festival & Academy 10th Anniversary: Piano Extravaganza (brief clip below).

Humans. We are amazing!  For good and for bad, but we are amazing creatures, and each individual is magic!

Unexpectedly, the evening changed for me.

I started, or continued,  my “reset” process. I refer to this, when one is able to re-connect with one’s internal happiness, when life makes sense again, and the outside world is not  important anymore.  The greatest thing of this reset events and moments, is that despite nothing outside me has changed,  my cheeks hurt of smiling 🙂 and I cannot stop it.

When one feels how life emerges from within and then it connects with the outside. All makes sense. It is just an awesome feeling 🙂 I wish everybody would live this constantly, including me 😛 .

Oh well! now to FOCUS 🙂 – yeap, I need to work – but with a BIG smile! 🙂

PS. Thank you to my hosts, for the evening and for sharing themselves with us. Also I want to thank to Claire who has enriched my life through the concerts, and she has taught me to appreciate music from a different perspective and also thanks to Mikko who teaches me constantly to care and to listen beyond words.

I need to write also about my crazy trip to Nice, which also let me smiling. Maybe my reset process started there 😉  Hmmmm… if I could live from reset processes to reset process I would not mind  😉 .

On July13 th and 14 th I was at the event called ILLUSIO. As far as I understand this was the second year the event was organized. ILLUSIO’s objective is to bring together people of the digital entertainment and game industry in Joensuu.

The team who organized ILLUSIO this years did a good job transforming the network Oasis facilities and creating a nice atmosphere for the event. I know network Oasis, and by default is an attractive location, but there is always space for improvement. Unfortunately, I did not take photos of the entire place, but here is one screenshot to give an idea of the transformation for those who know the location. This is on the orange room:

In addition to the atmosphere, the organizers really took care of us. Networking, food and drinks were not in shortage. Actually the number of participants was good. In huge events it is harder to meet people than when the group is a bit smaller.

This might sound strange, but without any question the game industry and also game researchers have its hallmark, i.e. its personality. It is hard to describe in here, but in brief I can say they are passionate and fast minds, but there is something that intrigues me too, as it had happened in DiGRA, IGDA and Salmokohta or any other game event I had been. One day I will find out and write a post about it 🙂

The topic of the event: audio. It was refreshing for me. I know about the power of sounds and audio, but without a question I learned something, for example, now I have a clearer understanding of what a sound designer do.  Also I got inspire and revive some ideas for games 🙂 .

The talks were not academic. The speakers share some of their experience and facts of the game industry in Finland, which in itself is interesting. I prefer the presentations that shared ideas about budgets, assets list, and visions. Nevertheless, as it happens always in these events, the most important part was: the experience and the networking.

This weekend is the Ilosaarirock, and my heart is crying despite I will be treated very well.  Exactly in Ilosaarirock 2011 I wrote a letter, that perhaps one day I will share, which expresses a personal life-mark and fills my eyes of tears. Lately, I have been learning that my past should not occupy all my present, otherwise there is not future, and this weekend is full of action about games in Joensuu, so to move forward!

However, life does not work that simply. I found amazing and shocking all what can happen to one person in exactly the same moment.  That is life, and we need to learn to live with it.

You might ask, what happen last year? Well, I was working very hard on my thesis in a hot flat. I was not allowed to travel because my visa was being renewed and it was my last opportunity to push my dissertation’s draft while my supervisor was in Finland. So, the rock festival’s music reached my window from far away and you could sense the happiness of the people in Joensuu. At the same time, my inner was in deep pain and sadness because I was not able to be next to someone I love and was dying. He biggest wished was that I could be next to him. He needed a hug, I know that and I could not give it. The only thing I could do was to be my best, to focus with tears in my eyes and listening life outside the window. To do my best was my commitment and strength.

It was very hard, and still is. I know I did my best. We talked and inclusive made him smile last time I talked to him. But still, this weekend marked me….

Life is a very intense and a mysterious game. A game that does not allow repetitions, replay or anything like that. Life just go forward.  I want to dedicate this weekend to him and to life. Because without any question  my life is full of happiness and sadness that are knitted tightly together very strangely. Hope to find the strenght to be always my best focusing correctly. Yeap, learning to play the game between happiness and sadness.

book review – nights of rain and stars

Book: Nights of Rain and Stars
Author: Maeve Binchy
Theme: Romance
Thesis: The life of four tourists in a holiday village in Greece

It has been long since I read something no-research related.  Some months ago, I got this book – night of rain and stars – from Eeva, but I didn’t read it. I confess my taste is not into romance books. Additionally, earlier this year I had no time to read. Later I got hypnotized under the Internet spell. But at some point I start to have the feeling I should return to read something interesting. Last week Tuesday, I have the inner need to read a book and I decide to read this one. By Friday I was done with it, the book is good.

The novel is sweet, however it is not cloying. The main idea is that four tourists bond together after an event happens in the village where they were making holidays in Greece. Four stories start to unfold, allowing us also to discover the lives of the protagonists and some village dwellers.  Vonnie, an Irish woman who has lived for 30 years in the town, plays a critical role in the unfolding stories of the four tourists.

The book reflects, in my personal opinion, two real life facts. On one side things happen for a reason. We might be stubborn to do not see them, but sooner or later, we might understand them. On the other side, one has the possibility to reflect upon one’s life experiences and by doing so one gets some wisdom. Tempo in life is just amazing I would say.

Run un den Kalendar

Yesterday I played Run un den Kalendar. We were 2 adults and one 4 years old.  In theory this game helps the children to learn the days of the week, the months and the four seasons.  I have my doubts if the game helps the children to learn about the days of the week and the months.  However in reference of the four seasons the game is well done, in my opinion.

The game mechanics involve some elements of chance and strategy. For example, depending which number one gets after spinning a wheel, one can move either right or left to the corresponding spot on the board. Then, the player takes the card and describes the picture connect to a season that is in that specific spot. The cards are placed randomly, so one has to pay attention. The game’s aim is to get a card of each season. So, the player has to think carefully which direction to take, to actually collect at cards of the four seasons. 😉

The game also pays special attention to fine motor skills, at least in one “mini-game”. Let me explain. The spinning wheel can indicate the number the player has to move in the board, or if the player has to play a mini-game which allows to get a seasonal card without moving the tile from the board. Ideally this card is from the season the player is missing.  The mini-game is about dropping a bar, which has all the seasons, between a player’s fingers. The player has to close her or his hand fast when the bar is passing by. Ideally  the player stops the bar in the season s/he needs. It is a fast mini-game within the game, where the children have to learn to practice their coordination skills  when dropping the bar and also to close their hands fast.

Designing games for small children is challenging. It increases the difficulty level when we aim to design games for a family with small children.  The constant question is:  how can  we design a game interesting for the small ones as well as for the adults?  mmmm…  interesting challenge to solve!  And you have to notice that I even didn’t even mention in my question the game’s learning aspect, because that increases the challenge. 🙂

If  I have to rate this game, I think I will put it 2 of 3 stars.   I confess, I have an enjoyable game experience of describing the seasons with the little one 🙂
